Lil Straight Classic, known affectionately as Bowie, is one of those rare horses every program hopes to produce—talented, trustworthy, and universally loved. Owned and shown by Chris Himes, Bowie is a cornerstone Team Penleyhorse whose versatility and heart have made him a true standout both in and out of the pen.
Started in Cowboy Mounted Shooting by Penley Horsemanship, Bowie was built on a correct, thoughtful foundation that emphasized clarity, confidence, and rider trust. That foundation carried him into an important role as a long gun horse for Drew Wallace, where consistency, steadiness, and reliability are non-negotiable. Bowie delivered—time after time—proving his ability to stay composed under pressure while executing at speed.
Now partnered with Chris Himes, Bowie continues to shine. He has the rare ability to lay down top times for an experienced rider and then turn right around to be patient, forgiving, and confidence-building for a novice. That duality is what makes Bowie special: he meets riders exactly where they are, without ever losing his own standard.
In the pen, Bowie is smooth, honest, and responsive. He reads patterns well, stays locked in on the job, and offers a steady rhythm that riders can trust. Outside the pen, he’s a barn favorite—kind, personable, and the type of horse everyone gravitates toward. He’s the one riders ask for, the one trainers rely on, and the one visitors remember.
Bowie represents the soul of the Penley program:Correctly started. Deeply trusted. Competitive when asked. Gentle when needed.
